RUN for the RABBITS!

teamrabbitshirt.jpg

Shannon McLoughlin Morrison is ready for her big run on Sunday! The "theme" of this year's Columbus Marathon is "Charity" and Shannon is representing CHRS and Team Rabbit as her chosen non-profit organization! Even better, she won the naming rights for The Columbus House Rabbit Society to have a sign at mile marker 18, and Shannon should be passing it sometime around 10:30am.

How can YOU get involved??

Sponsor Shannon in the race! Visit her Crowdrise site to make a donation for the CHRS bunnies! She is about halfway to her $1000 goal -- just think of all the spays and neuters that would cover!!

Come out and support Shannon by cheering her on! Sunday morning, we'll get a group together to hang out at "our" mile post when Shannon "hops" past! She'll be wearing her Team Rabbit shirt and bunny ears and tail! And we can track her progress on her Facebook page!

If you want to come support Shannon on Sunday, please email me at terri@columbusrabbit.org. Hope we can make Shannon proud!!

Team Rabbit is Making an Appearance at the Columbus marathon!

CHRS member/volunteer Shannon (McLoughlin) Morrison is running her 5th marathon at Columbus this year and running it for the bunnies! This year Columbus is promoting community activism, and what a better way to do this than to show some love for the buns. As a mom of 2 rabbits (Hoosier and Mandi), her love of bunnies has grown to respect for a pet that is curious intelligent, and becomes bosses of their people.

CHRS members are encouraged to hang out at Mile Marker 18 (which was 'won' in the name of Columbus House Rabbit Society), located in the vicinity of Woody Hayes Drive and Kenny Road. Other great spectator spots can be found throughout the section of the race in Upper Arlington, Grandview and along Victorian Village on Neil Avenue. Parking is free and you can usually find good spots.

How will you find Shannon? She will be wearing a Team Rabbit Shirt, bunny ears and a tail! Want to track how long will it take Shannon to make it to your viewing area OR can't make it the race? Follow her on facebook the day of race!

Would you like to help Shannon help the bunnies and CHRS? Donate on her team site: http://www.crowdrise.com/TeamRabbit

Thanks and "HOP" to see you there!

A New Arrival!

P1070419.JPG

I am very pleased to share the arrival of a new addition to the family of Heather and John Dean! Baby Avery Elizabeth arrived on June 9, 2011 - about 3 weeks early, but a healthy ‎7 lb 10 oz and 19.5 long!

The bunnies aren't sure yet what to make of all the new smells and sounds and strange activity in the house, but they are curious! Heather and John are making sure they are still getting plenty of attention, too, in between feedings and diaper changes and all the other comings and goings. I'm sure it won't be long before baby toys and bunny toys are interchangeable and Avery and the buns are keeping each other hopping!

Best wishes to the Deans as they start this new exciting phase!!

Run, Rabbit, Run!

ShannonMc.jpg (Buns Mandy and Hoosier, who probably don't care that mom is running, as long as they are fed on time.)

On October 16, 2011, Columbus HRS member and proud rabbit-parent Shannon McLoughlin Morrison will be representing "Team Rabbit" in the Columbus Marathon!

Mile Marker number 18 on the Course Map has been designated with Shannon's name in honor of her chosen charity - CHRS!

Shannon says, "I am running for the bunnies. Rabbits are one of the most abandoned pets and the third most euthanized. Adopt a bunny. Check out Columbus House Rabbit Society to learn more about owning a house bunny!!!! Please check out my Crowdrise site and donate for the buns!"

We are really proud of Shannon for committing herself to such an ambitious event, and are equally grateful to her for competing in the name of CHRS.

As the event date nears, we'll get a group together to hang out at Shannon's mile marker and cheer her on behalf of the bunnies! Go Team Rabbit!!!

Worms

wormsiStock_000000816147XSmall.jpg

When I was a kid, one of my dad's more unusual projects involved "worm farming." He spent several weeks building raised wooden beds in our garage. He had some sort of compost delivered to fill the beds. The worms were "red wigglers" - smaller and redder than the fat, tan earthworms in our yard. He sold them, but I never knew who bought them or what they did with them.

I had all but forgotten about the worm project when Jeremy and I went to an environmental expo last summer. One of the booths was about Urban Worm Farming. It had brochures and lists of websites and resources and recommendations for how best to build your "worm bins" (and now worm "hives!") covered all the finer points of raising worms. Aha!! Now I understood - the worms - "red wigglers!" - were used to make high-quality compost for gardening! With the new focus on sustainable living, worm farming and composting are gaining popularity. Suddenly my dad's worm project didn't seem so crazy. Rather, it seemed ahead of its time!

So when I got the following request, it didn't seem crazy at all.

This may sound like a strange question but I was wondering if you have old rabbit bedding that I may pick up? I run a small urban worm farm and am always looking for materials for worm bedding and food and old rabbit bedding or litter is great.

Some CHRS members practice composting with rabbit waste, including us. We use a combination of wood stove pellets and Carefresh for litter. Personally, we do not compost the wet material, but the dry fecal pellets make a very nice compost.

If you are interested in saving your used (untreated) rabbit litter for use in worm farming, please contact Jeremy Gedert via phone 614-441-1041 or e-mail one20farm@gmail.com.

Sharing the Joy - No Rabbit Content

My apologies for going off-topic but...

I love the Olympics. Spending hour after hour watching a bunch of people who are absolutely passionate about what they do is inspiring. But what really draws me in are those special moments when someone succeeds beyond expectations. I know - it's a cliche. But tears came to my eyes when Sasha Artemov got the job done.

In case you've been spending your time on more useful pursuits, Sasha is the American son of a former Russian gymnastic superstar. He also is known for his bad habit of choking at the wrong time. In fact, he wasn't even selected for the Olympic team but got the call when Morgan Hamm had to bow out.

The apparatus that tends to ruin his day is the pommel horse. Frankly, I don't really "get" the pommel horse. Basically, you spin your feet around while "walking" on your hands. Very strange but when done well, it's pretty cool.

So the Americans are about to lose the bronze medal and it's up to, you guessed it, Sasha on the pommel horse. And he did an amazing job.

Very cool! Ya gotta love it. The girls are on tonight. Another late night!
