Run, Rabbit, Run!
(Buns Mandy and Hoosier, who probably don't care that mom is running, as long as they are fed on time.)
On October 16, 2011, Columbus HRS member and proud rabbit-parent Shannon McLoughlin Morrison will be representing "Team Rabbit" in the Columbus Marathon!
Mile Marker number 18 on the Course Map has been designated with Shannon's name in honor of her chosen charity - CHRS!
Shannon says, "I am running for the bunnies. Rabbits are one of the most abandoned pets and the third most euthanized. Adopt a bunny. Check out Columbus House Rabbit Society to learn more about owning a house bunny!!!! Please check out my Crowdrise site and donate for the buns!"
We are really proud of Shannon for committing herself to such an ambitious event, and are equally grateful to her for competing in the name of CHRS.
As the event date nears, we'll get a group together to hang out at Shannon's mile marker and cheer her on behalf of the bunnies! Go Team Rabbit!!!

Worms

When I was a kid, one of my dad's more unusual projects involved "worm farming." He spent several weeks building raised wooden beds in our garage. He had some sort of compost delivered to fill the beds. The worms were "red wigglers" - smaller and redder than the fat, tan earthworms in our yard. He sold them, but I never knew who bought them or what they did with them.
I had all but forgotten about the worm project when Jeremy and I went to an environmental expo last summer. One of the booths was about Urban Worm Farming. It had brochures and lists of websites and resources and recommendations for how best to build your "worm bins" (and now worm "hives!") covered all the finer points of raising worms. Aha!! Now I understood - the worms - "red wigglers!" - were used to make high-quality compost for gardening! With the new focus on sustainable living, worm farming and composting are gaining popularity. Suddenly my dad's worm project didn't seem so crazy. Rather, it seemed ahead of its time!
So when I got the following request, it didn't seem crazy at all.
This may sound like a strange question but I was wondering if you have old rabbit bedding that I may pick up? I run a small urban worm farm and am always looking for materials for worm bedding and food and old rabbit bedding or litter is great.
Some CHRS members practice composting with rabbit waste, including us. We use a combination of wood stove pellets and Carefresh for litter. Personally, we do not compost the wet material, but the dry fecal pellets make a very nice compost.
If you are interested in saving your used (untreated) rabbit litter for use in worm farming, please contact Jeremy Gedert via phone 614-441-1041 or e-mail one20farm@gmail.com.

Local MMC Events - Columbus House Rabbit Society
The Easter season is upon us, which means our "Make Mine Chocolate!" campaign is in full swing. If you are not familiar with our annual campaign, please take a minute to visit our website at www.makeminechocolate.org.

The event will include raffle prizes and a bake sale. CHRS member Linda Davies has again offered to provide tables full of delicious baked treats prepared by her girls' service group Job's Daughters. Proceeds from this event will go to support the rabbits at the Capital Area Humane Society.

Wilson's Garden Center in Newark, OH on April 17, 2011 - 1:00-4:00pm
Wilson's Garden Center in Newark, Ohio holds an annual Easter event. This year, they are having the Easter Bunny pass out candy to children and have invited us to have an information table and feature an adoptable bunny. They understand we will not be adopting out any rabbits that day and that our focus would be educating people on proper rabbit care. The event takes place indoors with space for our table and a 4x4 pen.
Needed: Volunteers to attend the event from set up through tear down, including transportation of the foster bun.
Please RSVP to Terri (sauceypaw@gmail.com or terri@columbusrabbit.org) and let me know if you are interested in helping out.
