New Digs for Lacy and Brie

Two more babies, Lacy and Brie, have left home and are now living with foster mom, Karen Winstead. Although I knew it was coming, I have to admit to a momentary feeling of sadness, knowing that I will probably never see them again.

But looking at the picture below made me smile. I mean, really, is it possible to provide nicer housing than what Karen has provided for these young ladies?

I don't think so!

Mega thanks to Karen for providing a wonderful foster home while the ladies await their forever homes!

Karalee and Lucy are Famous!

Check out the front page of the Metro section of today's (Saturday, March 22) Columbus Dispatch! You'll find a terrific interview with Karalee warning against impulse purchases of rabbits for Easter. Also, there's a large photograph of Karalee and Lucy. If you don't get the Dispatch, you can read it here.

Congratulations to Karalee and Lucy!

They're Dating!

Three of our girls had their first date today. Brooke was clearly interested in her handsome suitor and will be leaving home tomorrow for an extended date.

Please keep your fingers crossed that the bonding goes well!

Babies No More & More Blackberry

I had another visit with the babies yesterday. They don't look like babies anymore, having grown into beautiful young adults, now nine weeks old. How quickly the time has passed!

Karalee had separated them into two groups of two and one group of three, in preparation for their transition to their foster homes. The split into smaller groups has gone very well as shown by white bunny Lacy and best friend Brie. While I was there, they spent some time grooming each other. They are very happy together.

It was good to see momma Lucy again. She looks fabulous and is clearly enjoying life as a single rabbit.

And last but certainly not least, I finally got to meet Blackberry, who had been dumped outside with Lucy and was rescued by Karalee and Wendy Marschner a couple of weeks ago. Although still recovering from her spay, Blackberry was in fine spirits. She is one of the most curious rabbits I have met. Having some doubts as to my intentions, she would come up to me, head bobbing up and down, then retreat to her box. But we became fast friends as soon as I started rubbing her head and ears.

Blackberry is such a sweet little rabbit. She is also still very much a young rabbit, anxious to explore every corner of her world. She is also smaller than I expected based on the photographs I had seen. Some lucky person is going to have a lot of fun with this little girl!

Wonderful Online Article

Check out this terrific article on living with rabbits! It stars Matilda, a former CHRS foster rabbit.

My favorite line: "Matilda is not 'spoiled'; she's 'indulged.'" So there!

Be sure to click on the "View More Photos" link on the right. There's a wonderful picture of Matilda standing on her hind legs.

Excellent Blackberry Spay News

Today was spay day and Blackberry came through like the trooper we know her to be. Like her friend Lucy, Blackberry was munching on hay on her way home from the vet.

Although spays are routine, we always breathe a sigh of relief when everything goes as planned. Especially when the rabbit has been through as much as Blackberry and Lucy have. But all is well and we're delighted.

Blackberry is really settling into her new digs. In spite of her lousy treatment by humans, she is a lovely, sweet rabbit who absolutely adores attention and pets. This little lady is definitely ready for a forever home full of love. May her wish come soon!!!

Leaving the Nest - Sigh

Two of the babies have left the Curry residence and are now living with Kim Banks. Yes, our babies are growing up. Sigh. Kim will have a lot of fun with these two and will continue their socialization as house rabbits. It's a bittersweet moment but one we knew was coming.

But wipe the tears away and smile when you see the pictures below. The girls are doing fabulously! A huge thank you to Kim for taking such good care of them!

I almost forgot to mention that the babies now have names! Two are listed below. You'll have to come back to find out what the rest are!

Introducing Blackberry!

Now that I've talked up the rescuers, it is with great pleasure that I introduce the rescued, Ms. Blackberry. Looking at her picture, it's hard to believe she spent so much time outside. Her paws are dark but her coat is in reasonably good shape with no sign of fleas or mites. However, like Lucy, she is wobbly. And like Lucy, she takes it all in stride, spending her time re-decorating her pen. Karalee says that Blackberry has quite the personality, turning boxes upside down and otherwise making it very clear that she is not totally appreciative of her new surroundings. My hope is that she ends up with a friend to keep her company.

Although Blackberry is wobbly, she otherwise looked good at her vet visit. She is due to be spayed on Wednesday, which should settle her down a bit. Time with Karalee and Chuck will also help her to adjust to life as a house rabbit. It's quite possible that she really doesn't know what that means. We know she lived in a hutch and also lived outside. But she is a smart and gentle soul who awaits her forever home.

We are really glad you are here, Blackberry!

Rabbit Hunters Extraordinaire!

Long overdue kudos to Karalee and Wendy Marschner for their extraordinary efforts in corraling rabbits who have been dumped outside. Our beloved Lucy, mother of the seven babies, came to us safely because of Karalee and Wendy.

Just last week, this dynamic duo made another extraordinary catch. Last Monday, after scrambling in the muddy ground under a boat located in a stranger's back yard, they were able to rescue Blackberry. Serious diplomatic skills were required to convince the former "owner" of Lucy and Blackberry to let Blackberry be rescued.

It appears that at least four rabbits had been released from their hutches almost a year ago. One of the rabbits was hit by a car. The whereabouts of the fourth one is unknown.

But Lucy and Blackberry are safe. Two tremendous rescue efforts. Major kudos to our favorite rabbit hunters!

Can It Be True?

Last week, Karalee and Chuck tried sexing the babies but concluded that it was too early. The source of their uncertainty? It appeared that six of the babies are girls, with only one boy in the litter.

Friday night, they tried sexing them again and came to the same conclusion. Is it really possible that Lucy had six girls? Karalee and Chuck will take another look next weekend just to make sure.

Yesterday, I had the opportunity to visit with Lucy and the babies. Lucy looks fabulous! She has recovered fully from her spay and feels terrific, even though she's still a bit wobbly. Falling doesn't bother her in the least. Truly an indomitable spirit.

The babies are now seven weeks old and have grown a lot since I last saw them. They now weigh somewhere in the 1 1/2 to 2 pound range. And yes, they are still impossibly cute!

They are also getting to the age that some of them are starting to squabble. White Bunny continues to insist on things going her way. She is the biggest of the babies, opinionated, and smart. The person who adopts her is going to have a lot of fun with this girl! She is now living with one of the checkered babies who is less pushy.

A second pair includes one of the gray girls who has the most amazingly delicate ears. This girl likes having some privacy, which is tough to have in a group of seven! She, too, is living with a sibling.

In the next few weeks, some of the babies will go off to their foster homes, awaiting adoption. The remainder will stay with Karalee. It has been great fun watching them grow up. Our hope, now, is that their forever homes will come soon.
