The Breakdown
Thank goodness for the beautiful shelter at Heritage Park! It kept our picnickers dry enough to enjoy the day in spite of its soggy start! And what a great day it was! We had the best turn-out ever and a terrific selection of delicious food. Who would have guessed that hot food in crock pots would be the biggest hit on a June day?!

Our games and prizes were a lot of fun. We found out that Cornhole is the game of choice for some, while others still enjoy the beloved Bunny Bingo. Our photo contest produced some of the cutest rabbit pictures we’ve ever seen! It was a tough call in each category, but foster bun Murphy in the hay feeder (“Buns in Strange Places”), sweet Georgie sleeping (“Favorite Picture”), and fuzzy little Scout (“Cutest Mouth”) were voted No. 1. The competition may have been stiff, but it was easy to see how much we all love our bunnies!

We also recognized some of our deserving volunteers with awards thanking them for their service. Karen Winstead, nominated by her peers, received the Annie M. Curry Volunteer Service Award in appreciation of her dedication to Columbus HRS’ mission and her extraordinary work with the Capital Area Humane Society to better the lives of the shelter’s rabbits.

Sue and Megan Metzger jointly received the Gus B. Curry Meritorious Service Award, given by our Board of Directors, in recognition of their years of continuous fostering and Megan’s additional help with campaigns, special projects, and acquisition of low-cost medical supplies.

Terri Cook was given a “Volunteer of the Decade” award for her 10 years of service with Columbus HRS – including years before it was ever an official chapter. From folding brochures and staffing the booth at the old Pet Expo to working at the annual Vet Conference, from making one of our first display boards to creating our current newsletter, from “emergency” fostering one bunny to becoming a licensed fosterer and educator, Terri has always been involved and committed to our mission.

This year, our raffle prizes were also some of the best ever, including original artworks by professional artists and CHRS members Joseph Larkin and Grace Willard. Always popular, our fundraising efforts benefit greatly when their work is offered. The “grand prize” was to have your own rabbit’s portrait drawn by Joseph. Grace crafted a photo album from the scraps of timothy hay that her bunnies didn’t eat, processing the hay into paper and binding the book with twine. It’s a beautiful creation. Other terrific prizes included a selection of Oxbow hay and pellets, a Busy Bunny Tent Tunnel, brightly colored wooden bunny toys, a cottontail cottage, a car cleaning kit, a set of fun pictures and eyeglass holder, a bunny statue/key safe, a bunny stepping stone, a gardening set, and a collection of organic lip balms and perfumes.

And finally, about the time things were winding down, the clouds broke and the sun smiled down on our happy group.

See the fun! http://www.columbusrabbit.org/indexpicnic.htm
